When I was in my elementary and high school years I don't study at home. I just believe in stock knowledge. That stock knowledge which I acquire when I listen to the class discussion. In elementary and high school Obviously with that stock knowledge survived elementary and high school without any failing grades. Things are a lot different in college... If you don't study at home you are in trouble. I thought that what the professor discussed in the class will only be the coverage in quizzes/exams. But I was wrong about it. The stock knowledge thing didn't work to me. So, in my first year college I'm having a hard time studying at home. For me that time, studying is just reading anytime, anywhere, and anyhow. Which means that I don't have any study habits that time.
I read an article by John M. Grohol, PSY.D. entitled 10 Highly Effective Study Habits from PsychCentral. In this article Mr. Grohol said that "The key to effective studying is not cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter." . To tell us when we study smarter Mr. Grohol list 10 study habits which he said that is proven and effective, these are:
- How you approach studying matters
- Where you study is important
- Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t
- Outline and rewrite your notes
- Use memory games (mnemonic devices)
- Practice by yourself or with friends
- Make a schedule you can stick to
- Take breaks (and rewards!)
- Keep healthy and balanced
- Know what the expectations are for the class
In that 10 study habits Mr. Grohol pointed out that the you should mindset yourself to study not on other things, a peaceful place is better place to study to avoid distractions, don't bring things which is not needed and bring the things that you need to avoid time consuming, have your own outline format makes it easier to remember, try to use acronyms to memorize, practice makes perfect in studying, set a schedule when you study, take a break when you study, balance things and keep a healthy lifestyle, and when something you don't understand don't be afraid to ask questions.
And an important thing that Mr. Grohol said that "Don't forget to learn!". I think he said that because most of the student study just to pass the subject. When you study, you should understand it by heart, it's okay that you forget that exact words but you know the thought of it.
May be the author wants to tell the readers that if we study, we should be studying not only to pass the subject, but also to learn what the lessons are. He stated 10 study habits which he said that it was proven and effective but below these study habits he also mention and emphasize the word "LEARN". Which I think the most important thing in studying.
For more explanations it is provided to his article.
Thank you for reading. have a nice day
